The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs; Dutch: De Smurfen) is a popular Belgian comic franchise centered around a fictional community of small, blue, human-like beings who reside in mushroom-shaped houses within a forest. The characters were first created by Belgian artist Peyo, the pen name of Pierre Culliford, in 1958, debuting as Les Schtroumpfs. Over time, the franchise has introduced more than 100 Smurf characters, each distinguished by names derived from adjectives that highlight their individual traits—for example, "Jokey Smurf," known for his love of practical jokes. The first female Smurf, named Smurfette, was introduced later in the series. The Smurfs are commonly depicted wearing Phrygian caps, a symbol that has historically come to represent freedom.
